Synopsis :

Azrael demands the release of his companions but Brian persuades him to spend the night wih Ra's. Ra's is pleased with this and intends to use him to help him against The Order. In order to verify that Jean-Paul really was an Azrael Ra's sends five of his best assassins against him. During the commotion Brian is awakened and falls out of a window, and dies. Ra's uses the Lazarus pit to heal him before his brain dies. When Brian is ressurected Ra's directs that he rest so he can make his proposition to Jean-Paul, Ra's offers money, power, immortality and his daughter but Jean-Paul refuses saying that he is already a slave to the Sytem and the Order, instead he asks that Ra's helps him tame the beast within him.

Review :

Denny has scripted a story in which a great deal happens in a short period. He gives Azrael a definate sense of himself and a strong desire for freedom. Besides fleshing out Jean-Paul as a charcter Denny also does a series of short vignettes examining Lilhy's first experiances wiith pleasure, eating breakfast and having a bath. This highlights the very differant upbringing she recieved.

The art is phenomenal Barry can make Jean-Paul look as young as he is, and still capture his maturity in the furious expression he has on his face when he refuses to be a slave. In fact emotion played a large part in this issue and the artistic team did a magnificent job of capturing it.

Rant :

The change to Miraweb format in the Bat-books has meant a phenomenal improvement in the quality of the art but not so in Azrael, not because the art hasn't improved but because the colouring was so incredible to begin with that it couldn't get much better. The glossy paper certainly brings out the wonderful colours, which is great because I think that Azrael was the first to have 100% computer colouring.
