Azrael reads Clench survivor Kendall's journal and learns of two other people who survived the Clench filovirus outbreak in Greenland. Azrael asks Oracle to track down a triad member named Fong and she locates him in San Francisco, where he is impressing upon his associates that he is immortal. Azrael Catwoman and a tracker named Longshadow make their way onto the boat Fong was staying on in order to get him to Gotham so an antidote can be made. Fong's delusions of grandeur lead him to prove to them by stabbing himself in the heart. Catwoman checks his pulse and confirms that he's dead and that this may mean that Gotham may never survive.
Review :
Fong is an intersting character. Denny O'Neil has clearly taken a new twist on survivor syndrome, Fong's method of dealing with his survival, to fathom out why he lived and no one else did, is to believe that he was immortal, invincible. It's very obvoius that psychology is an important factor in Azrael, it is this that gives Azrael it's unique flavor. Denny doesn't forget about the supporting cast, he further explores Jean-Paul's feelings for Lilhy, interestingly enough more is understood by the reader through the perceptions of other characters notably Catwoman.
Rant :
One thing I haven't been able to figure out is exactly why Catwoman calls Azrael choirboy, he gave her no clues as to his history, the only thing she can possibly know is that he used to be Batman. It's also cool to see Azrael leading this ragtag team, he organised their air drop and cleared the yacht of guards.
